In June and July 2024, 19 imported cases of Oropouche virus disease were reported for the first time in the European Union, with the most cases reported in Spain (12), followed by Italy (5) and Germany (2)[1][2]. Eighteen of these cases had a history of tourism to Cuba, one case was infected in Brazil[1]. Symptoms first appeared on May 26, 2024[1]. Globally, Brazil (7,284), Bolivia (356), Peru (290), Colombia (74) and Cuba (74) had the most cases in 2024, with two deaths reported in Brazil[1]. The peak of confirmed cases in the Americas was in January 2024, with a subsequent downward trend until the end of July[1]. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) assessed the risk of infection for EU citizens traveling to affected areas as moderate, while the risk of local transmission in the EU was low, as the vectors typical of the Americas are not found in Europe[4].
