An epidemic of monkeypox clade I that started in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in November 2023 has spread to Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. The number of cases in these countries may be higher than reported due to oversight and underestimation of incidence. In the EU/EEA, the risk to the general public is currently assessed as low, as the probability of infection is very low. Persons in close contact with cases have a high probability of infection, but the severity of the disease is usually low, except for those with weakened immune systems. In August 2024, the first case of clade Ib was confirmed in the EU/EEA. More than 12,500 cases were reported in the DRC by November 2023, and the fatality rate was 4.6%. In other affected countries, 15,636 suspected and 3,101 confirmed cases were reported, including 541 deaths. The risk of introducing the virus into the EU/EEA is higher for travelers to affected areas, especially in close contact with local communities.
