Financial actors, including private equity funds, are increasingly buying and selling hospitals, nursing homes and medical practices. Real estate investment trusts (REITs) emerged as a form of financial ownership. REITs own real estate for healthcare facilities. Healthcare providers pay rent to REITs. REITs discourage short-term profiteering. REITs promote long-term investments in healthcare. These investments support patient access and quality of healthcare.
