A recent study in PLOS Medicine reveals wide disparities in the number of psychiatric beds in the US. Globally, psychiatric bed capacity varies by up to 80 times between OECD countries. These differences reflect the history, politics and models of mental health care. Without global standards and access, the effectiveness and quality of psychiatric care remains uneven.
