The study evaluated the effectiveness of a brief intervention "Punguza Pombe Kwa Afya Yako" (PPKAY) with text boosters to reduce binge drinking in patients after acute injury in Tanzania. 448 patients were included in the study, of which 300 were assigned to the intervention group and 148 to the usual care group. The intervention consisted of a 15-minute motivational interview and weekly text reminders for one year. After three months of follow-up, the intervention group had an average of 1.2 fewer heavy drinking days (95% CI: [-2.3, -0.3]; p = 0.002) compared to the usual care group. Most of the participants were men (94%), most often from the Chagga tribe (59%), the average age was 36.4 years. The study pointed to a potential risk of bias due to self-reported outcome and unblinding of participants. The results suggest that a culturally tailored intervention may be effective in reducing binge drinking in a given population. The next phases of the study will compare the intervention with versions without text boosters.
