Almost half of patients with acute myocardial infarction (including STEMI and NSTEMI) have multivessel disease with significant stenoses in vessels that are not the direct cause of the infarction. These patients have a higher risk of death or recurrent heart attack. Complete revascularization, i.e. restoration of flow in all significantly narrowed vessels, is therefore important for improving the prognosis. Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or surgical revascularization are standard treatment procedures. Urgent angioplasty within 12 hours is recommended for patients with persistent ST segment elevation. In patients with NSTEMI, the invasive solution according to the risk is within 2 to 72 hours. Complete revascularization reduces the incidence of death, recurrent heart attacks and the need for further interventions. The treatment also includes drug therapy and rehabilitation to reduce the risk of recurrence.
