A series of articles in the Lancet journal on ultra-processed foods (UPF) pointed out that their global spread has become one of the most pressing threats to human health in the 21st century.[2] An analysis of 104 long-term studies showed that 92 of them reported an increased risk of at least one chronic disease with a diet rich in ultra-processed foods.[2] These foods are associated with a higher risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, mood disorders, kidney disease, and chronic inflammatory bowel disease.[2] Ultra-processed foods damage almost every organ of the human body, and people are not biologically adapted to their consumption.[2] Evidence suggests that the more ultra-processed foods make up the diet, the lower the nutritional value of the overall diet.[2] Experts suggest clear labeling of the degree of ultra-processing on packaging, restrictions on marketing aimed at children, strict rules for the sale of these foods in schools and hospitals, as well as the introduction of tax and regulatory tools.[2]
