Violence against women and children is a serious violation of human rights, with intimate partner violence being the most common form of violence worldwide. Almost one third of women have experienced violence from an intimate partner or sexual violence from a non-partner. Psychological violence is the most common form of intimate partner violence and is often rated as more serious than physical violence. Six out of ten children under the age of 5 are regularly exposed to psychological violence or physical punishment from their parents or guardians. After separation from the abuser, the violence often does not stop; up to 90% of women report ongoing harassment, stalking or abuse by an ex-partner. This phenomenon represents an ignored public health crisis and a preventable injustice. Global and national statistics also show that most victims of violence do not report these incidents to the police or victim support organizations, making it difficult for them to be protected and access justice[1][4][7].
