Researchers conducted a study on 40 healthy men aged 18-34 years, divided by physical condition, to examine the effect of cocoa flavanols on vascular function during prolonged sitting. Participants drank a beverage with either high (695 mg) or low (5.6 mg) flavanols and then sat without moving for two hours. The results showed that men who consumed the low flavanol beverage experienced a significant reduction in vascular elasticity, independent of their physical fitness. Conversely, those who drank cocoa rich in flavanols maintained arterial function without decline throughout the entire period of sitting[1][3][4]. Flavanols are thought to promote the production of nitric oxide, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the vascular wall and improves their expansion, thereby improving blood circulation and reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory processes[1]. In addition to cocoa, common foods such as berries, apples, and tea are also sources of flavanols, which can help protect blood vessel health in the long term[3][4]. The dose of flavanols in one cup of cocoa (250 ml) made from 10 g of cocoa powder is approximately equivalent to 40 g of dark chocolate with 52% cocoa solids[4]. This study suggests that regular consumption of foods rich in flavanols may be a simple and effective way to mitigate the negative effects of prolonged sitting on the blood vessels, thereby promoting cardiovascular health[1][3][4].
