A joint ECDC and WHO/Europe bulletin summarises reported cases of mpox (monkeypox) sent through the IHR/EWRS mechanisms and the region's data systems.4 The bulletin provides weekly and cumulative statistics: for example, as of 28 June 2012, the number of cases of mpox in the region was 1.5. July 2025, 24,995 cases of mpox have been confirmed in 29 EU/EEA countries since the start of the epidemic, with the highest numbers in Spain (8,834), France (4,508) and Germany (4,441).3 The bulletins also regularly report smaller, recent waves of cases; between 19 June and 28 July 2025, 94 cases were reported in 12 EU/EEA countries.3][3] In the bulletins, ECDC and WHO/Europe emphasize continued monitoring, including sequencing of viral clades and subclades to identify cases associated with clade Ib or Ia.[3][5] The bulletins include recommendations for countries, which include maintaining orthopoxvirus testing, strengthening prevention in sexual health services, contact tracing, and targeted vaccination strategies for those at higher risk.[1][3] The documents also state that clade I (clade I) and importation cases continue to pose a risk of entering the region, warranting increased vigilance and early reporting.
