The study used a mobile app to track students' calorie intake over a four-week period. The results showed that students consume more calories when they are in the company of friends, eat in cafeterias or have an unstructured daily routine. Students often underestimate the amount of food they will eat, especially in social or formal restaurants. Emotional influences, gender differences, and environmental cues contribute to a gradual but consistent increase in caloric intake. The results indicate that these factors together create the conditions for the so-called The "freshman 15," which is a common weight gain at the beginning of college. The study does not report exact percentages or numbers of weight gain. The main findings relate to the influence of the social environment, dietary regime and perception of one's own food intake.
