New tools to fight malaria saved about a million lives last year in 80 malaria-endemic countries. Among these tools is the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine, which has been given to 1.7 million children in sub-Saharan Africa and has significantly reduced the number of deaths and severe cases of malaria. Vaccination is planned to be extended to another 12 African countries where malaria is endemic. Despite these successes, however, resistance of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite to the basic antimalarial drug artemisinin is growing, posing a serious threat to the control and treatment of malaria, especially in children with a severe course of the disease. Research in Uganda has shown that approximately 10% of children with severe malaria show partial resistance to artemisinin. WHO recommends combination antimalarial treatment and preventive measures such as mosquito nets and repellents to reduce the risk of infection. The development and introduction of new vaccines together with resistance monitoring are key to further progress in the fight against malaria[1][2][3].
