Scientists studying people with serious mental disorders found that drinking up to four cups of coffee a day was associated with longer telomeres, suggesting a delay in biological aging by about five years. Telomeres are the protective ends of DNA that shorten with aging and stress, and their length is an indicator of biological age. However, drinking five or more cups of coffee a day does not have this effect and may even damage the cells. Coffee's effect is attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can protect cells from damage. Thus, the study suggests that moderate coffee consumption may be beneficial for slowing aging in people with mental illnesses. This result also supports knowledge about the positive effect of coffee on health and longevity in other areas. However, research does not recommend excessive coffee consumption due to possible negative effects on cells[1][2][3].
