The study analyzed traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) research trends in the treatment of asthenopia (eye fatigue) by the end of 2024 based on literature from the Web of Science, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases. Research has seen a fluctuating but growing trend, with Chinese medical universities and their hospitals in China being the dominant institutions. Major areas of interest include elucidating treatment mechanisms, optimizing acupuncture point stimulation in external therapy, and improving systemic TCM decoction programs. Research is unevenly distributed geographically, with a concentration in China, but since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign research has been gradually expanding, probably related to lifestyle and the development of electronic technologies. Current trends focus on the creation of evidence-based TCM clinical intervention programs and the modeling of comorbidities associated with asthenopia. Overall, the study provides a comprehensive overview of the current status and prospects of TCM research for eye fatigue.
