The study systematically evaluated the efficacy and safety of combined acupuncture therapy in the treatment of cervical dorsal myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). It analyzed 21 randomized controlled trials with a total of 1,630 patients. The results of the meta-analysis showed that combined acupuncture therapy significantly improves pain scores according to the visual analog scale (SMD = −1.51, p < 0.00001) and increases the clinical effective rate (RR = 1.15, p < 0.00001). The therapy also improved neck range of motion, particularly flexion (MD = 7.76, p = 0.03), and reduced PRI pain scores (MD = −0.45, p < 0.00001). Subgroup analysis indicated greater efficacy in patients older than 35 years. Adverse effects have been reported rarely, but the safety profile remains incompletely understood due to insufficient safety data. The authors emphasize the need for further high-quality studies to confirm these findings.
