In 1978, Andreas Grüntzig published the first report of transluminal dilatation of coronary artery stenosis, starting a revolution in cardiovascular medicine. The first successful balloon coronary angioplasty procedure was performed by Grüntzig on September 16, 1977 in Zurich on a 38-year-old patient with left anterior descending artery (LAD) stenosis with approximately 80% narrowing. This patient was followed for 45 years, which provides a unique insight into the long-term effectiveness and durability of this method. The procedure made it possible to restore blood flow without the need for open heart surgery and without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. Grüntzig's technique became the basis of modern interventional cardiology and significantly improved the treatment of ischemic heart disease. This method has since expanded and become a standard in the treatment of coronary disease. Long-term follow-up results confirm that angioplasty can be permanently effective and safe.
