Scientists studying oral bacteria have discovered a new way to prevent gum disease. This method consists in influencing the bacteria not by killing them, but by changing their communication. They disrupt the chemical signals that bacteria use in the so-called "conversations". By doing this, plaque shifts towards healthier and less harmful bacterial communities. The discovery enables new treatment procedures. These procedures prevent disease by maintaining a balanced microbiome in the mouth. They don't need to completely wipe out all the bacteria.
