Scientists used miniature human brains grown in the lab to study genetic mutations that cause abnormally small brains. Changes in the actin gene disrupted the orientation of early dividing brain cells. This led to the premature disappearance of key brain progenitor cells. The result was a reduction in the brain's ability to grow normally. This study provides a clear cellular explanation for the microcephaly associated with Baraitser-Winter syndrome.
