A study in the US found that brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were present in multiple layers of firefighting gear, including newer items labeled as "PFAS-free"[1]. Some substitute chemicals appeared in the analyzed parts in equal or higher amounts than the substances they were supposed to replace[1]. Equipment that is supposed to protect against extreme heat can therefore simultaneously lead to chemical exposure of firefighters to these substances[1]. BFRs are a group of organic brominated compounds used as additives in combustible materials (eg textiles) in order to retard burning[1]. These compounds are known to persist in products and may be released during the life of the product or during its disposal[1]. In the European Union, some classes of BFRs (e.g. polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polybrominated biphenyls) are regulated or banned in certain applications[1].
