On December 5, 2025, the American Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted to rescind the current universal recommendation to vaccinate all newborns against hepatitis B and proposed that vaccination of children born to mothers who test negative should be done on a case-by-case basis in consultation with a physician[1][2]. The vote passed by a vote of 8:3[1][2]. The committee recommended that if the postpartum dose is refused, the hepatitis B vaccination series should begin at least at two months of age[2][3]. Changes in the composition of the committee are attributed to Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy, who appointed all of the committee members[2][4][5]. Medical experts and professional organizations have expressed concern that such changes may increase hepatitis B infections in infants and children, and have pointed to deficiencies in maternal screening[1][4]. The December decision concerns the recommendations of the advisory committee; their formal adoption is to be decided by the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)[2].
