Researchers have discovered how cells activate a last-resort system to repair DNA when severely damaged. When genetic tangles overwhelm normal repair pathways, cells turn on a rapid, error-prone emergency repair. This backup system helps cells survive. Some cancer cells rely on it extensively. In doing so, their DNA becomes more unstable. Blocking this process could provide a new way to intervene against tumours.
