After the Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, hospitals experienced a sudden increase in serious health problems. In the following three months, emergency room visits for heart attacks, lung disease, and general illnesses skyrocketed. Researchers noted unusual changes in patients' blood tests. These effects were linked to fine particles from wildfire smoke along with stress. Smoke from the fires worsened air quality, leading to warnings of high pollution levels. Children, the elderly, and patients with heart or lung disease are more sensitive to these particles. The fires have also caused other risks, such as worsening asthma and exposure to cyanide or carbon dioxide from burning houses. Hospitals face congestion during flu season and some are threatening evacuation.
