New research suggests that even light drinking increases the risk of oral cancer. A large study in India found that consuming one standard drink a day was associated with about a 50% higher risk of the disease[2]. The greatest danger is posed by locally brewed alcohol. If drinking alcohol is combined with chewing tobacco, the risk increases significantly. This combination may explain nearly two-thirds of all oral cancer cases in India. Studies confirm serious health risks even with minimal alcohol use.
