National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya has stated that grants related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that were renewed by court order will not be renewed in 2026.[1] In June of this year, a court order forced the renewal of funding for more than 2,000 terminated grants.1 In the podcast, Bhattacharya stated that while he cannot immediately discontinue grants that the court has forced to be renewed, these grants no longer meet NIH's priorities and will not be reinstated when they are next renewed.[1] The Director issued a statement saying that NIH is no longer interested in funding DEI initiatives.1 Bhattacharya divided DEI-related grants into three categories: grants that have been renegotiated, grants that have been terminated without the influence of court decisions, and grants that "the court has forced to renew."[1] According to a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services, NIH does not comment on individual grant decisions.2 Bhattacharya also said that NIH has not commented on individual grants.
