In the remote islands of the state of Chuuk in Micronesia, tuberculosis had long gone undiagnosed due to a lack of resources for X-ray machines. Two years ago, a portable X-ray machine assisted by artificial intelligence enabled health workers to diagnose tuberculosis in seconds. Almost all patients with active tuberculosis were then treated. Artificial intelligence cuts clinical trial time in half. It is helping to discover new antibiotics and more effectively predict disease outbreaks, including those linked to climate change. Health systems in developing countries face shrinking budgets as demand grows.
