Microplastics in rivers, lakes and oceans are not just litter, they are constantly releasing invisible clouds of chemicals into the water. This process is driven by sunlight, which causes the plastics to weather. Different plastics release different and evolving mixtures of dissolved organic compounds. These chemical clumps are complex, richer and more biologically active than natural organics. They contain additives, broken polymer fragments and oxidized molecules.
