Silicon Valley is trying to revive the Bell Labs model through new research centers free of bureaucratic constraints. Backed by billionaires like Sam Altman and Masayoshi Son, Episteme is attracting top scientists to work in a variety of disciplines, including AI, energy, materials, new batteries and superconductors. Scientists receive a stable salary, laboratory resources, equity and support to commercialize ideas without the pressure of grants. Episteme is inspired by Bell Labs and Xerox PARC, but adapted to the current conditions of science. Historically, corporate laboratories like Bell Labs have downsized due to shareholder pressure for short-term profits. Episteme provides assistance with intellectual property, tax and personnel matters so that scientists can focus their time on research. The aim is to support researchers who are dissatisfied with existing systems.[3][5]
