New research shows that time-restricted eating (an eight-hour eating window) without reducing calorie intake did not improve insulin sensitivity or cardiovascular markers. The researchers found that only the body's internal clock was altered, shifting based on meal timing and altered sleep patterns. The results suggest that the real driver of the health benefits of intermittent fasting is not the eating window itself, but the reduction in overall caloric intake. These findings are consistent with the observation that in order to lose weight, we need to burn more calories than we take in each day. The research thus challenges the widely held view that time-restricted eating alone boosts metabolic health without changing the amount of food consumed.
