The SARC-HD study investigated the incidence of sarcopenia (a disease characterized by low muscle mass and weakness) in 983 hemodialysis patients in Brazil with a mean age of 59 years[2]. The results showed that approximately one in four patients had some stage of sarcopenia – probable sarcopenia occurred in 12% of patients, confirmed sarcopenia in 9% and severe sarcopenia in 5% of patients[2]. The incidence of sarcopenia increased with age, ranging from 7% to 45% in men and 4% to 21% in women, depending on age[2]. Older age (≥60 years), male gender and Caucasian ethnicity were identified as independent risk factors, whereas overweight and obesity were protective factors[2]. This knowledge can help doctors identify patients with a higher risk of sarcopenia in time and implement early diagnostic and treatment measures.
