Difficult colleagues are a common feature of some workplaces and their behavior often reflects a toxic environment marked by narcissism, bullying, insecurity, poor leadership and competitiveness. Michael El Boghdady, chief registrar in general surgery and director of education at the Association of Trainee Surgeons, says that if these problems are not addressed during training, they can persist. A colleague's hostility or defensiveness may stem from personal insecurity, stress, or a lack of insight into the impact of their actions. The first step in solving it is to understand the root cause of such behavior. When appropriate, start with an honest and respectful conversation, focusing on how their behavior affects the team and patient care. Clear, non-confrontational communication can sometimes prompt self-reflection and change.
