Residents reported foul-smelling and discolored water, followed by vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and high fevers. Official tests of water samples at MGM Medical College confirmed the contamination that caused the illnesses and deaths. A preliminary assessment shows that the mixing of sewage with municipal water supply has occurred in distribution networks and reservoirs. Delays in tenders and poor monitoring have contributed to several such incidents in the city. Health authorities emphasize the need for safe water supply systems and better surveillance.[1]
