Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other officials released the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025–2030 on January 7, along with an inverted food pyramid.[1][2][3] The new pyramid puts protein, dairy, and healthy fats at the top next to vegetables and fruits, while whole grains are at the bottom.[1][2][3] The guidelines emphasize eating whole foods, meats, fresh vegetables, eggs, nuts, avocados, seafood, and full-fat dairy products.[1][2][3] For the first time, they explicitly call for a reduction in the intake of highly processed foods, added sugars, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives.[1][2][3] They recommend protein at every meal, a variety of protein sources including red meat, beans, and soy, as well as reducing alcohol consumption.[2] Saturated fat should not make up more than 10% of daily calorie intake.[2] At a White House press conference, Kennedy stated that the previous guidelines misled and protected corporate interests and called for eating real food.[1][3] The guidelines will affect school meals and military food supply.[2]
