The number of measles cases in the US last year exceeded 2,000 for the first time since 1992, marking the third highest annual incidence in three decades[5]. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded a total of 2,065 confirmed infections in 44 jurisdictions, a significant increase from 285 cases in 2024[1][4]. The ongoing outbreak means the US could lose its measles-free status if it fails to bring the number of cases under control[3]. South Carolina has seen the largest number of cases, with 188 cases reported in the state as of July 9, mostly in children ages 5 and older[6]. In the last week of December, approximately 53 new cases were reported with outbreaks in Arizona, South Carolina, and Utah[3]. Most confirmed cases have occurred in unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated people[9].
