Bariatric surgery outperforms GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide, according to a new comparison of more than 50,000 real-world patients.[1] Two years after treatment, surgery patients lost an average of about 58 pounds, while those on medication lost about 12 pounds.[1] Patients who remained on GLP-1 drugs for a full year achieved much smaller weight loss results than surgical patients.[1] A study has shown that bariatric surgery results in significantly greater weight loss compared to medication.[3] High drug dropout rates and challenges in real-world practice weaken their effectiveness.[1] The results confirm that surgery brings a greater effect in long-term weight loss.[6]
