The climate crisis is making conditions increasingly lifeless in many parts of the world. Extreme weather events destroy homes, infrastructure and crops, which increases food prices and can cause hunger. The increase in severity and frequency of these events reduces the ability of communities to recover and rebuild. This forces people to move. Climate migration can be an emergency evacuation, like the flooding in Valencia, Spain in 2024. It also takes place over the long term due to chronic drought in the countryside, for example in East Africa. It is sought after by flooding uninsurable homes and businesses or stealing land, as in Kiribati. Climate change sometimes acts as an aggravating factor.
