Clare Thornton-Wood, registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, advises eating small, regular snacks during long shifts. Long shifts require sharp thinking, perseverance and emotional resilience. Long-term work disrupts normal eating habits, slows metabolism, makes hunger signals irregular and increases cravings for sweet or ultra-processed foods. Limited space in the refrigerator, access to the kitchen and constant movement around the hospital make the situation difficult. Before your shift starts, eat a main meal with whole grains, lean protein, and vegetables for a slow release of energy and to prevent crashes. Good options include brown rice stir-fries, lentil curry, whole-wheat pasta, fish or chicken with potatoes and vegetables, or hearty vegetable soups with lentils or beans and whole-wheat bread.
