Millions of people with dementia are still prescribed drugs that alter brain function and increase the risk of falls and confusion. Despite long-standing guidelines, the prescription of these drugs has not decreased sufficiently. A new study shows that prescribing has decreased overall, but is increasing among people with cognitive impairment. In many cases, there is no documented medical justification for the prescription. The results of the study indicate that the safety of these drugs remains a serious concern in the care of patients with dementia.
