On 13 October 2025, the 20 remaining living Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza since 7 October 2023 were released. Thousands of Palestinians have been imprisoned or detained by Israeli forces. Since 2023, there have been reports of torture and inhumane treatment of them. The released Israeli hostages were immediately taken to specialized medical centers, where doctors evaluated them. Palestinians lack the same level of access to health care, although NGOs such as the International Committee of the Red Cross provide basic support. The full extent of the impact on both physical and mental health may not be seen for decades, say researchers and people with experience as hostages. Hagai Levine, head of the Hostage and Missing Families Forum's health team, said time will tell to what extent they can recover and return to a new life.
