Overdose deaths in the U.S. declined through most of 2025, federal data show, indicating continued improvement in the long-running epidemic. The data follows a significant drop in the number of deaths in 2024, when the number of overdose deaths in the U.S. fell by about 27% compared to 2023, according to preliminary data.[5] In the summer of 2023, drug overdoses reached about 113,000 deaths in a 12-month period, while by spring 2025 they had fallen to about 76,500 deaths in a 12-month period, the lowest figure since March 2020.[4][5] A downward trend was seen in most of the country, although some states had partial increases.[1][4] Despite the improvement, the absolute number of overdose deaths remains very high, with more than 100,000 deaths in 2023.[5][8] Data is based on preliminary CDC statistics on overdose deaths and is updated continuously.[4][5][7]
