Overdose deaths in the U.S. fell for most of 2025, federal data released Wednesday showed. This decline suggests a sustained improvement in an epidemic that has been worsening for decades. Federal data confirms that overdose deaths are falling more and more. According to previous data, April 2025 deaths nationally reached 76,500 over the previous 12 months, the lowest since March 2020. Provincial data for 2024 predicts an unprecedented 27 per cent drop in overdose deaths from the previous year. 105,007 Americans will die of drug overdoses in 2023, after sharp increases in 2020 and 2021. Seven states and Washington, D.C. saw the biggest declines, with reductions of 35 percent or more. Better tracking systems, access to naloxone, buprenorphine and drug control tools contributed to the improvement.
