A Chinese app called "Are you dead?" is currently the most downloaded paid app in the country, especially among young people living alone, introverts and the unemployed.[1][2][3] Users must click a large button every two days to confirm they are alive.[1][2][3] If they don't, the app contacts a predetermined person and alerts them to a possible problem.[1][3] The app was launched by Moonscape Technologies in May 2025 in the city of Zhengzhou without much publicity, but its popularity has skyrocketed in recent weeks.[1][2][3] The creators developed it for about 123 euros and plan to sell 10 percent of the shares for 123 thousand euros for expansion.[1][2] They are considering a new version for seniors, as more than a fifth of China's population of 1.4 billion is over 60.[1][3] According to forecasts, up to 200 million people may live in single-person households in China by 2030.[3][4] The app will change its name to the global Demumu brand in the new version.[6]
