The General Medical Council (GMC) reports a significant decrease in disproportionate referrals by ethnic minority doctors and non-UK graduates. The proportion of employers with excess referrals by ethnicity or place of qualification fell by 48% from 5.6% in 2020-2024. The difference in referral rates between ethnic minority doctors (0.58%) and white doctors (0.3%) decreased by 61% to 0.11% (0.26% versus 0.15%). For non-UK graduates (0.7%) versus UK graduates (0.09%), the gap fell by 28% to 0.13% (0.15% vs. 0.28%). The GMC has made progress in reducing the "collective shame" of such recommendations. The regulatory body is on track to meet the goal of eliminating inappropriate recommendations by the end of 2026, set in 2021.
