A rigorous systematic review and meta-analysis showed that prenatal use of acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not associated with a higher risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability in children.[2][4] A study from Sweden of nearly 2.5 million births, published in 2024 in the journal JAMA, showed no association when comparing siblings.[2][4] A Japanese study produced similar results, where up to 40% of women used paracetamol during pregnancy, but the risk of autism or ADHD was not confirmed.[3] The European Medicines Agency (EMA) confirmed that the available evidence did not find a link and pregnant women can use it at the lowest effective dose.[7] The US FDA does not recognize any proven link between paracetamol and autism.[5][7] Scientists warn that unsubstantiated claims can lead to not using the medicine for pain or fever, thereby endangering both mother and child.[3][4]
