MAHA claims its new food pyramid is affordable and healthy. The new pyramid is inverted, with proteins, dairy products, healthy fats and agricultural crops at the top, which are recommended to be eaten in abundance. At the bottom are ultra-processed foods and artificial sweeteners, which must be drastically reduced. A low-carbohydrate diet with an emphasis on meat, fish, full-fat dairy products and saturated fat up to 10% of calories is recommended. What is new is the recommendation of fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir or miso to support the intestinal microbiome. Experts appreciate the emphasis on unprocessed foods, but express concern about the promotion of red meat and full-fat dairy products. The American Heart Association recommends plant-based proteins and lean meats instead. These guidelines affect food assistance programs and school meals.[5][2][3][6]
