The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study analyzes the burden of amphetamine, cannabis, cocaine, and opioid use in 204 countries from 1990 to 2023.[1][3] Estimates show that the prevalence and burden associated with the use of these drugs increased during this period.[1] The increase is particularly pronounced in high-income countries such as the US.[1] The global prevalence of drug use disorders reached 53,115,936 cases in 2021, an increase of 35.50% since 1990.[1] The number of deaths increased by 122.22% and DALYs (years of life lost due to premature death and disability) by 74.65%.[1] Opioid (82.07%) and cocaine (59.57%) disorders were the main contributors to the increase in DALYs.[1] A higher burden was observed in men and the population aged 15–39 years.[1] Population growth is the main factor in the increase in DALYs (35.31%).[1]
