Wastewater testing is an effective tool for the early detection of infectious diseases. CDC scientists have shown in two studies that wastewater monitoring can alert public health officials to measles infection days to months before cases are confirmed by doctors.[1] In the Slovak Republic, the presence of the virus in waste water samples is determined by the RT-PCR and digital dd-PCR methods, while the samples are taken in cooperation with individual operators.[1] Wastewater monitoring is proving to be an effective tool to protect vulnerable communities from the consequences of antimicrobial resistance.[2] Researchers from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University found that monitoring indicators of antimicrobial resistance in wastewater is more effective than testing individuals and provides a more comprehensive picture of population health.[2] Data on diet, consumption of alcohol, drugs or tobacco can be detected from waste water, as well as exposure to dangerous chemicals can be monitored.[3]
