Hospital admissions due to the flu are falling, while norovirus cases are rising sharply. In NHS hospitals in England, the number of norovirus cases rose by 57% to 567 in the week ending January 11, from 361 the previous week. Overall, there was a 47% increase in the first two weeks of 2026 compared to the previous fourteen weeks ending 28 December. At least 10 NHS trusts have declared critical incidents due to high demands and capacity issues. An average of 2,725 patients were in hospital beds with the flu last week, down 7% from 2,924 the previous week. These data show a continued decline in hospitalizations for the flu after the holiday season.
