Terence English was a cardiothoracic surgeon who led the team in the first successful heart transplant in Great Britain in August 1979 at Papworth Hospital.[1] He was born on 3 October 1932 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and died on 23 November 2025 in Iffley, Oxford at age 93.[1] Originally studying mining, he later switched to medicine and received surgical training under leading surgeons such as Donald Ross and Russell Brock.[1] He specialized in cardiothoracic surgery at Papworth and Addenbrooke's Hospitals, Cambridge from 1973–1995.[1] He established one of Europe's leading heart and lung transplant programs at Papworth.[1] He was President of the Royal College of Surgeons 1989–1992, President of St Catharine's College 1993–2000 and President of the British Medical Association 1995–1996.[1] In 1984–1985 he held the post of president of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation.[1] He has received several awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and 2014.[1]
