The study, titled "An LLM chatbot to facilitate primary-to-specialist care transitions: a randomized controlled trial," was published in Nature Medicine online on January 19, 2026 with doi:10.1038/s41591-025-04176-7. It included 2069 patients and 111 doctors in 24 specialties. Patients completed a pre-consultation session with a chatbot powered by a large language model (LLM). This chatbot eased the transition from primary to specialty care. Patients in the intervention group had a significantly shorter consultation time. Both patients and doctors reported improved communication and higher satisfaction. It was a randomized controlled trial.
