For the past 16 years, Poonam Muttreja has been the Executive Director of the Population Foundation of India (PFI), a civil society organization working at the intersection of population dynamics, gender equality, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. Earlier, from 1992 to 2009, she served as the first Indian director of the MacArthur Foundation. There, she helped shift population policy from control-based approaches to rights-based approaches with a focus on women's health. Her perspective was shaped by her own experiences and long-term involvement in vulnerable communities. She worked in the field of human rights, gender rights and livelihoods. PFI is a leading think tank that supports gender-sensitive population policies, sexual and reproductive health and development strategies. Muttreja has over 40 years of development experience and has co-founded social justice and craft organizations. In 2014, she co-invented the popular multimedia initiative Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon.
